MURDER, MYSTERY AND REDEMPTION IN DETROIT

DETROIT, Michigan, July 7/PRNewswire/Theater patrons can expect a unique theatrical experience on August 6-7 with the presentation of (4) one-act plays entitled LIFE: In 4-Part Harmony at the International Institute (111 E. Kirby) in Detroit.
The production LIFE steps out the proverbial box and promises to leave patrons in awe.  The creative genius behind this venture is native Detroiter and playwright Octavia Lesley. Lesley, who is noted in this month’s B.L.A.C. magazine discussion on theatre, is betting Detroit audiences will appreciate this showcase.  The (4) one act plays cover everything from teenage angst and spiritual redemption, to murder and revenge.  “This  production is a culmination of good writing, great acting, and unique stories,” says Lesley.
Lesley’s partners on this project include Sylvia Hubbard, Monica Link, and Tony Omar. For Hubbard, a published author, this is her first stage play based upon her book Sweet Justice.  Lesley’s contribution Tainted is based upon real life events and this is her sophomore project. Link, a theater veteran who recently moved to New York is bringing the hilarious story The Church Folk to audiences.  Omar, also a theater veteran who’s previously worked with Grammy Award winner Twinkie Clark, and many other notable entertainers, is making his return to theater with Come Back Home.
According to Hubbard, “The synergy we create offers patrons a better bang for their buck and demonstrates unity within the arts community.  With this new economy, sharing the production costs of a stage play just makes good sense,” said Hubbard.
Tickets for the Saturday (7:00) performance are $20 or 2 for $30, which includes a 6:00 first come, first serve pre-show reception.  Sunday’s (3:00) performance tickets are $15 or $10 for groups of 5 or more.  Vendor and business ad opportunities are also available. Tickets are available at God’s World, Baker’s Bible Bookstore, Globe Bookstore, online, and delivery.

The Stage Was Set: The Rise, Decline and Potential of Black Theater in Detroit

A local filmmaker, actress and writer examines the changes in Black theater in Detroit over the last 50 years

Angela G. King

All over Detroit, Black folks were putting on plays wherever they could—in schools, storefronts, recreation centers and especially churches.

Enter three idealistic young actors in the early 1960s with the gumption to open a Black theater with a permanent home. Motivated by the social and political unrest of the day, Woodie King Jr., Cliff Frazier and David Rambeau joined forces to establish Concept East.

According to Lesley, “Life: In 4-Part Harmony is unique in that it steps outside the box with a variety of stories told in one setting. Life offers audiences murder, mayhem and mystery with plenty of laughs in between.”  Hubbard further points out the financial benefits for the theater patron and the producers. “The synergy we create offers patrons a better bang for their buck and also demonstrates unity within the arts community.  With this new economy, sharing the production costs of a stage play just makes good sense,” said Hubbard.
